Hollywood, CA – Though they certainly weren’t the most shocking, accusations of running a “sex cult” weren’t the only ones being thrown at R. Kelly this week.
Ahead of the Buzzfeed story breaking, two-time Grammy-nominated producer Drumma Boy also took to Instagram to call out Kelly for plagiarism. In the caption, Drumma details how the songwriter copied his beat on T.I.’s “You Ain’t Missin’ Nothing” for Whitney Houston’s “Salute” in 2009.
HipHopDX caught up with Drumma Boy to get his thoughts on the R. Kelly scandal on Wednesday (July 19) at the Kat Tat-hosted Season 3 premiere of VH1’s Black Ink Crew: Chicago at Tinhorn Flats Saloon & Grill in Hollywood, CA.
“My thoughts on R. Kelly right now are not too good. I just recently posted some shit he did,” Drumma boy stated. “I’m a fan of R. Kelly, to be honest with you. When I put out the Paper Trail, we put it out in 2008. .. on Tip’s album. It was just crazy to hear in 2009, [R. Kelly] released the same track on Whitney Houston’s album. In September. So it’s just funny like, ‘Damn. I gotta be a genius if the genius himself can replay and plagiarize the homie.’”
He adds, “It’s a blessing, man. I just stay focused. Keep making these hits. What R. Kelly doing ain’t got shit to do with me. Fuck that shit.”
DX also asked what he thought about the new allegations about R. Kelly’s sexual misconduct.
“I just feel like what’s meant to happen will happen. So definitely stay tuned. It’s the new generation. It’s the new young kings and producers coming up. They had their time. It’s a new era. Stay tuned.”
Drumma Boy’s recent endeavors include producing Too Short’s latest single, “Ain’t My Girlfriend,” featuring Jeremih, Ty Dolla $ign and French Montana. He’s also working on his next album, titled The Concoction.
