The nominees for the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards were unveiled on Tuesday (July 25) via Instagram Live, an awards show first.
Kendrick Lamar leads the pack with eight nominations in categories like Artist of the Year, Video of the Year, Best Hip Hop and Best Cinematography. Pop princess Katy Perry and Canadian R&B luminary The Weeknd are tied for second with five nominations each.
The Best Hip Hop nominees include Kendrick Lamar (“HUMBLE.”), Big Sean (“Bounce Back”), Chance The Rapper (“Same Drugs”), D.R.A.M. with Lil Yachty (“Broccoli”), Migos with Lil Uzi Vert (“Bad & Boujee”) and DJ Khaled with Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance The Rapper and Lil Wayne (“I’m The One”).
For the first time in MTV Video Music Awards history, the Best Female Video and Best Male Video categories have been combined into Video of the Year, while a Best Fight Against The System category has also been added. The new category highlights videos that inspire viewers to “stand up and fight injustice,” and finds Logic’s “Black SpiderMan,” Big Sean’s “Light” and Taboo’s “Stand Up / Stand N Rock #NoDAPL” up for the honor.
The 2017 Video Music Awards go down August 27 at 5 p.m. PST at The Forum in Inglewood, California. Check out the nominees below.
