During a recent interview with DJ Semtex for BBC Radio 1Xtra, DJ Khaled talked about his new star-studded album Grateful and the subliminals he evidently missed on previous projects like 2011’s We The Best Forever.
“Let me be clear, everybody knows working with me that I’m not about no diss records,” Khaled said. “So that’s not happening.”
But it did happen on We The Best Forever. On the track “I’m On One” featuring Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne, Drake spits, “Hate these fucking allegations/I’m just feeling like the throne is for the taking/Watch me take it,” which appeared to be a rather obvious stab at JAY-Z’s Watch The Throne album with Kanye West. But Khaled admitted he often doesn’t realize there’s a diss until after the track is done.
“Sometimes there’ll be lyrics in the track, and I don’t catch it until the record comes out,” he said. “Sometimes I’m so excited to get the verse, and I don’t realize it’s a subliminal in there. At the end of the day, I get it. We all do it in a certain way.”
Considering the buzz surrounding JAY-Z’s 4:44 album and seemingly endless disses that came along with it, perhaps Khaled will sharpen his listening skills in the future and try to decipher the lyrics bar-by-bar like the rest of us.
Either way, there’s clearly no bad blood between Hov and Khaled who have collaborated plenty of times in the past. The two were photographed together just last month. Check out the post above.
